"...fuses
a mojo mix of rock, soul, jazz, reggae, blues, and psychedelic music... a sound that is as
unique and diversified as each of its
members."
= WHO WE ARE =
FreeWorld has been an independent, regionally touring, ever-evolving
Memphis-based musical ensemble since 1987, and recently
celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 2012. Drawing from
influences as broad-based as Booker T. & the MG's, John
Coltrane, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, Steely Dan and The
Meters, these brothers under one multicultural groove have
remained a consistently entertaining and informed voice on the
Memphis music scene since the group's inception.
Featuring 82-year-old jazz saxophone legend Dr. Herman Green (who has
performed &/or recorded with the likes of Miles Davis, John
Coltrane, B.B. King, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Phineas &
Calvin Newborn, Bob Weir, Rob Wasserman, Stephen Perkins and a
host of others during his 68 year professional music career),
FreeWorld is literally 'new school meets old school', and has
been variously described as "The best of Memphis, New Orleans, &
San Francisco - all rolled into one fresh & excitingly unique
musical experience!"
They've also had the privilege of sharing the stage with a wide variety
of musical legends over the years, such as Levon Helm, The
Memphis Horns, Billy Preston, Richie Havens, Blues Traveler,
Derek Trucks, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos, Merl Saunders, Dr. John,
Timothy Leary, John Sinclair, The Bar-Kays, Ann Peebles, Steve
Cropper, James Cotton, Mojo Buford, Jimmie Vaughan & Double
Trouble, Susan Tedeschi, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, and
Widespread Panic just to name a few.
Their recent Brass Note Induction Ceremony on Beale Street consisted of
the unveiling of both their & their long-time trumpet man,
William "Nokie" Taylor's, new Brass Notes on the Beale Street
Walk of Fame by the Beale Street Brass Note Committee, as well
as several short speeches given by current & former band members
and closely associated partners from their 25 year history of
playing Memphis Music on Beale Street.
“Eventually Everything Will Happen”, FreeWorld’s brand new 25th
Anniversary Documentary DVD (produced and directed by Jonathan
Pekar at Ardent Films), celebrates their longevity and
accomplishments on film for the first time and allows the viewer
to meet the band up close and personal and hear their story
through a wide variety of both inside sources (including current
& former band members Richard Cushing, Dr. Herman Green, Ross
Rice, Willie Waldman, Dave Aron & Hope Clayburn, among many
others), as well as closely associated outside perspectives
(including Luther & Cody Dickinson from the North Mississippi
Allstars/Black Crowes, Grammy Award winning producer/engineer
Jim Gaines, & "Jim Dandy" Mangrum from Black Oak Arkansas) that
span the broad spectrum of the band’s 25 year history.
“Yesterday, Today… Tomorrow”, their 6th full length release, is a
retrospective companion CD to their brand new 25th Anniversary
DVD documentary, and includes thirteen tracks culled from their
five previously released albums, as well as three additional
bonus tracks never before released on any official FreeWorld CD.
(Featured guest performers include Luther & Cody Dickinson,
James Govan, & The Masqueraders).
“Eventually Everything Will Happen” and “Yesterday, Today… Tomorrow”
serve as proud milestones in a musical career that now spans
more than a quarter of a century. We can only wonder what the
next 25 years will bring for FreeWorld, but one thing is for
certain: “Eventually Everything Will Happen"!
In addition, both releases also proudly feature original paintings on
both the front & back covers (and on the discs themselves) by
prominent Memphis-based artist John Lind with
HairFarmer Studios.
If you haven't picked up a copy of our new CD "From the Bluff" yet
(produced by Jim Dickinson, & featuring guest appearances by his sons
Luther and Cody Dickinson, Art Edmaiston, Hope Clayburn, Nokie Taylor,
Rick Steff, The Masqueraders, James Govan, Jackie Johnson & Richard
Thomas), then feel free to ask any one of us at one of our upcoming
gigs, and we'll be more than happy to hook you up!
You can also feel free to pick one up at a wide variety of music stores
across the Memphis & Mid-South area (such as Spin Street, Davis-Kidd,
Border's, & Cat's, etc.), or you can also download a copy directly to
your computer or iPod from a wide variety of online music distributors
such as iTunes, Amazon.com, Rhapsody.com, or directly from the new
digital store on our website at http://www.FreeWorldJams.com
If you are a local Memphis Musician in need of health insurance
assistance, feel free to go to the Church Health Center (located at 321
South Belleview, ph. 272-7526), and tell them you need the "Memphis
Plan" application form. Fill it out (listing the "Memphis & Shelby
County Music Commission" as your Employer), and be prepared to be able
to provide proof (via recent tax returns, etc.) that you make at least
51% of your annual income directly through the music industry. The MSCMC
will then pay the monthly premiums for you, and you'll be good to go!
If you have a problem qualifying for this plan, we also had a
representative from another Health Insurance Agency give a presentation
at our MSCMC Board meeting last month. Feel free to contact Beth Lemley,
Outreach Coordinator, at:

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatles fan named Jerry Levitan, armed with a
reel-to-reel tape deck, sneaked into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto

an incredible, animated film about it... check it out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmR0V6s3NKk

FreeWorld Rocks The Beale Street
Music Festival
Beale crowd breaks record 108,00 jam in two days. Read the entire Beale Street Music
Festival Music Review from the Commercial Appeal
here.
FreeWorld can easily be
called the tightest jam band in Memphis ...They mesmerize audiences with their free-form
funk/soul/fusion ....This hip band should be headlining out on the H.O.R.D.E. tour. --
Nancy Apple
...while the faces have
changed, the band has still managed to consistently improve, something that is especially
evident on their recordings. FreeWorld's latest, Diversity, is the best of the three discs
the band has cut so far...Diversity shows off the band's best ... with the catchy
"D-Up" being a particular favorite. As for the jams, instead of focusing on
noodling that is best appreciated live, this time out the band thankfully reined it to
make room for the 15 quality compositions. --
Mark Jordan
FreeWorld's forte is getting
the funk out, and that's precisely what they do on their best tracks.... reminds me of a
cross between Traffic and George Clinton, with its ecstatic Ur-groove,
flute-player-on-acid vibe, and exuberant shouted chorus....lyrics seem almost incidental
in the face of this lavish musical blitz. --
Stephen Grimstead
The overall sound of
(Diversity) to me sounds like the perfect mix of what would happen if Dave Matthews Band,
The Allman Brothers Band, and Widespread Panic had a baby.--
JamBands.com
Get down with the most
versatile band in Memphis. That is what I do every time I experience FREEWORLD either live
or on their latest CD called "DIVERSITY". When I listened to this CD for the
first time, I had to do a double take to make sure that this was the same CD playing.
Never have I seen so much variety from one band.--
Memphis Dave
